Chinese Wu Xing

The Chinese Wu Xing is traditionally composed of five elements: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood. The Bagua further breaks things up into the eight trigrams (Heaven/Sky, Lake/Marsh, Fire, Thunder, Wind, Water, Mountain, & Earth), however the five core elements are possibly more common.

The Wu Xing elements form two cycles:

  • Wood feeds fire;
  • Fire creates earth (ash);
  • Earth bears metal;
  • Metal collects water;
  • Water nourishes wood.

  • Wood parts earth;
  • Earth absorbs water;
  • Water quenches fire;
  • Fire melts metal;
  • Metal chops wood.
